  • The company claims to have identified a potential development pipeline of over 800 MW

Spanish oil and gas producer Naturgy has forayed into the renewables market of Italy with an initial portfolio of over 200 MW agrivoltaic projects and claims to have identified potential developments with a total capacity of over 800 MW.

Both the solar PV projects will be located on farmland in Apulia and Lazio regions that will be developed with another 35 MW of battery storage. Their commercial operations are due to begin in 2025 and are currently at an advanced state of administrative development.

It has also entered several agreements with unidentified developers and local players to add new capacity to its portfolio beyond the 2 agrivoltaic projects.

“Naturgy has a clear, concrete and realistic goal of renewable development also in Europe. Italy is one more step in our decision to reach 60% renewable generation worldwide in the coming years,” said General Director of Renewables, New Businesses and Innovation at Naturgy, Jorge Barredo.

Italy intends to support agrivoltaic installations with a €1.2 billion support scheme backed by the European Commission in July 2022 as part of its €191.5 billion Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) (see Italy’s €1.2 Billion Agrivoltaic Scheme Approved).

Following this, Pacifico Energy Partners and Eiffel Investment Group also announced joint investment to build 300 MW agrivoltaic and storage systems in Italy in December 2022 (see Agrivoltaic & Storage Joint Venture For Italy Announced).
